2023 Race Day

Hilary’s Story

"What I never realized at the time though was how that race and group of people would impact my life forever. "
Seven years ago, I was asked by a coworker to come to her house one night; she had an opportunity for me to get involved with organizing a race that she and a group of friends had started. I wasn’t a runner and didn’t have any experience organizing events, however, I was a college student at the time and was looking to add things to my resume. I agreed, figuring at the very least this would be something fun to do. What I never realized at the time though was how that race and group of people would impact my life forever.

I didn’t understand at first that this wasn’t just a race. But it only took me one race day and the first runner crossing the finish line in honor of a victim to realize that. To realize that it was about a cause and bringing awareness. It was about shedding light on domestic violence and bringing help to our local shelter, SafeHomes. It was about educating the public on how prevalent this issue is in our community. It was about letting those who are suffering know that they are not alone. It was about helping and serving. It was never just about a race.

It’s been seven years and I’m still here. Some years it’s challenging, some years you’re stressed, and some years you’re questioning whether you’re doing enough. But never in my seven years have I questioned why I’m here. I’m here because domestic violence must be advocated for. Victims need a voice, survivors need support, and the community needs to know how to help. I’m here because I want to make a difference and not just stand on the sidelines. It’s been seven years and while I still might not be doing enough or making a big enough difference, it’s still one of the best decisions I ever made. I’m proud and honored to be a part of Jingle Jam and to help support domestic violence awareness and SafeHomes of Augusta.
