10 Years of Teen Dating Violence Awareness

This year we celebrate 10 years of JJ10K and 10 years of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic violence can occur across a range of ages, genders, cultures, and economic demographics. Teen dating violence (TDV) is a type of intimate partner violence that occurs between two people in a close relationship. It is a type of intimate partner violence that is common.

What is Teen Dating Violence?

Dating abuse displays the same signs as abuse between intimate partners. Abuse occurs when one person uses abusive and violent behavior as a tool to gain power and control over the person that they are dating.

Why is Teen Dating Violence YOUR problem?

Teen dating violence is common. By knowing the signs of teen dating violence, you are equipping yourself to protect the teens that you know from experiencing teen dating violence— whether it be a friend, family, or teens that your work with. How do we combat TDV? Speak with your teens, teens that you know, or your friends (if you are a teen) about what a healthy relationship looks like.

While it is important to speak about TDV every day, we especially want to bring it to light during February— Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. In 2010, congress declared February as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Therefore, this year, not only are we celebrating 10 years of running to end domestic violence with JJ10K, but we are also celebrating 10 years of awareness that has been brought to TDV.

There are many facets to domestic violence. Jingle Jam 10K only scrapes the surface. If you or someone you know is experiencing teen domestic violence, contact SafeHomes’ 24/7 7-days a week hotline at 706-736-2499.
